Saoirse Black (They/He/She)

I am a student counsellor working toward my level 8 in Counselling and Psychotherapy.
I am always learning. I appreciate the ongoing process of learning more about myself and the world to better support my clients.

My lived experience is atypical. I have lived in three different countries. I identify as queer, polyamorous, genderqueer, dyslexic, neurodivergent, and disabled. Through my lived experience and my studies, I have seen the benefit and power of having safe, LGBTQIA+ affirming and neuroaffirming spaces to explore our identities and to get to know ourselves. Knowing and becoming ourselves is an ongoing process throughout our lives.

Every person is unique and has unique therapy needs and goals. I endeavour to provide a nonjudgmental, empathetic, supportive space that understands you are the expert of your own experience.

I understand the roles of oppression and power on our lives and their effects on our mental and emotional wellbeing. As a disabled person, everything I do is based on the social model of disability, which recognises disability as a form of oppression and looks to shift the power back to disabled people ourselves. This work sometimes involves unpacking internalised ableism and shame. I believe we all have a growth tendency within us, and the ability to take responsibility, solve our problems, and free ourselves.

My special interests are: identity; self-understanding; self-acceptance; how we relate to others and our society; fitting-in and belonging; grief and loss (of a loved one, a future, or an idea).
